Testing for intransitivity of preferences predicted by a lexicographic semi-order

چکیده
A classic paper by Tversky (Tversky, A. (1969). Intransitivity of preferences. Psychological Review, 76, 31–48.) reported that some people systematically violated transitivity of preference when choosing between specially constructed risky gambles. This conclusion remained controversial because his statistical analysis did not allow each participant to have a different true preference order. Recently, however, it has been argued that an inherently intransitive process governs risky decision making. This paper uses a relatively new statistical technique for testing transitivity and analyzes two new experiments in which hundreds of participants made choices among the same gambles studied by Tversky. It was found that very few people repeated intransitive patterns. The incidence of violation of transitivity was slightly higher when probability was displayed graphically without numerical information, but even in this condition few participants were intransitive. Furthermore, even among those few who appeared to be intransitive, most showed dimension interaction, contrary to implications of the lexicographic semi-order. These results cast doubt on a lexicographic semi-order as a descriptive theory of risky decision making. 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Lexicographic goal programming approach for portfolio optimization
This paper will investigate the optimum portfolio for an investor, taking into account 5 criteria. The mean variance model of portfolio optimization that was introduced by Markowitz includes two objective functions; these two criteria, risk and return do not encompass all of the information about investment; information like annual dividends, S&P star ranking and return in later years which is ...
متن کاملMulti-Objective POMDPs with Lexicographic Reward Preferences
We propose a model, Lexicographic Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (LPOMDP), which extends POMDPs with lexicographic preferences over multiple value functions. It allows for slack–slightly less-than-optimal values–for higherpriority preferences to facilitate improvement in lower-priority value functions. Many real life situations are naturally captured by LPOMDPs with slack. We cons...
متن کاملTesting transitivity in choice under risk
Recently proposed models of risky choice imply systematic violations of transitivity of preference. This study explored whether people show the predicted intransitivity of the two models proposed to account for the certainty effect in Allais paradoxes. In order to distinguish “true” violations from those produced by “error,” a model was fit in which each choice can have a different error rate a...

Received (received date) Revised (revised date) Accepted (accepted date) We study a simple example of a sequential game illustrating problems connected with making rational decisions that are universal for social sciences. The set of chooser's optimal decisions that manifest his preferences in case of a constant strategy of the adversary (the offering player), is investigated. It turns out that...
متن کاملMulti-Objective MDPs with Conditional Lexicographic Reward Preferences
Sequential decision problems that involve multiple objectives are prevalent. Consider for example a driver of a semiautonomous car who may want to optimize competing objectives such as travel time and the effort associated with manual driving. We introduce a rich model called Lexicographic MDP (LMDP) and a corresponding planning algorithm called LVI that generalize previous work by allowing for...
